I might be biased, but I think Wynnum is one of Brisbane’s loveliest spots for a day out. We’ve lived here for two years now, and what started as somewhere to live has become a place we’re really happy to call home. There’s the waterfront, the independent cafés and shops, the op shops, the parks and the local events that bring everyone together. But what I love most is that it still feels like a proper community.

It’s also a brilliant place to spend a day with kids. You can wander along the Esplanade, splash around at the wading pool, grab a coffee or an ice cream and let little ones burn off some energy at the park, all without needing to plan much at all.

If you’re looking for things to do in Wynnum, whether you’re visiting with family, meeting friends for brunch or simply fancy a relaxed day by the bay, here are some of my favourite spots and things to do.

Wander through Wynnum village centre

Vintage lovers should allow extra time for the suburb’s collection of op shops; it’s the kind of place where an hour can quickly disappear as you browse for pre-loved fashion, books and hidden treasures. Don’t miss my favourite Do-Op Shop, packed with carefully curated clothing and homewares – I rarely leave empty-handed!

Beyond the op shops, you’ll find a handful of independent boutiques ideal for a leisurely browse. For gifts, one of my favourite stops is Florence and Cornelius. It’s the kind of shop I head to when I need a present but have absolutely no idea what to buy.

Make your way to the waterfront

Wynnum Esplanade, Brisbane

From the village centre, it’s less than a 10-minute walk to Wynnum’s waterfront, where sweeping bay views and a breezy foreshore set the pace for the rest of the day.

Stretching for several kilometres, the Esplanade is made for wandering. Follow the waterfront past shady picnic spots, playgrounds and grassy parklands, stopping to watch kiteboarders skim across the bay or locals casting a line from the Wynnum Jetty, one of Brisbane’s favourite fishing spots.

If you’re visiting with little ones, don’t miss the popular Wynnum Aqua Park, better known to Bluey fans as the Whale Park featured in “Pass the Parcel”, or Pandanus Beach, a calm sandy stretch complete with the iconic wading pool that’s a favourite with families. There’s even a complimentary box of beach toys for children to borrow while they play; just remember to pop them back before you leave.

Visit on a Wednesday and you might catch the Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club in action. Their colourful, illuminated model yachts glide across the wading pool after dark, creating one of Wynnum’s most unexpectedly calming evening spectacles.

Conveniently located opposite the wading pool, Whale Park and jetty, Pelican’s Nest Café is an easy stop for fish and chips, an ice cream or a cold drink while soaking up the bayside atmosphere.

For a quieter side of Wynnum, detour through the Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk. Winding through one of Brisbane’s largest mangrove ecosystems, the elevated timber walkway offers a chance to spot crabs, birdlife and the unique coastal environment that thrives along the bayside.

If you’re in no rush, keep following the Esplanade south towards neighbouring Manly. The scenic waterfront path links the two suburbs, so you can turn a stroll into a longer bayside adventure.

Where to eat and drink

One of my favourite things about living in Wynnum is having so many great local spots to choose from, whether it’s a coffee and pastry, a long brunch or an ice cream by the water. These are a few of our regulars.

  • Banette: For beautifully presented brunches, chic interiors and some of Brisbane’s most Instagram-worthy coffees.
  • Edith Street Coffee: Proof that simple is often best. Friendly service and consistently excellent coffee keep us coming back.
  • Ilo Bakehouse: Our new local is a dangerous 90-second walk from home. With a delicious range of pastries on offer, it’s becoming a little too easy to justify popping in for a coffee and something sweet.
  • The Gnome Bookshop & Café: Browse the shelves with a coffee in hand before settling in for a cosy breakfast or lunch.
  • Waterloo Bay Hotel: A family favourite thanks to its classic pub meals and secure outdoor playground.
  • Pepe’s Mexican Bayside: Colourful and inviting when you’re craving tacos, margaritas and a lively atmosphere.
  • Munja Pizza: Excellent woodfired pizzas that are great for sharing after a day exploring the bayside.
  • Matilda The Art of Gelato: End the day with a scoop (or two) before taking a stroll along the Esplanade.

As the sun goes down, Wynnum takes on a different kind of charm. Fairy lights twinkle through the town centre, restaurants spill onto the footpaths and the bayside settles into a relaxed evening rhythm that’s just as inviting as its laid-back days.

Spend the afternoon like a local

Wynnum Jetty, Brisbane

One of Wynnum’s greatest strengths is its gentle pace. Once you’ve explored the waterfront, there are plenty of ways to ease into the afternoon and evening.

For a movie with a difference, head to Bayside Cinemas. The independently owned cinema offers affordable VIP tickets complete with reclining seats and table service.

If moving your body is more your idea of relaxation, book a casual class at Stretch Pilates. The light-filled studio offers reformer Pilates, barre and stretch classes, with casual visits available from $28, making it easy to fit in a workout while you’re visiting.

History buffs can also follow the self-guided Wynnum Heritage Trail, which uncovers the stories behind the suburb’s evolution from seaside holiday destination to the thriving bayside community it is today.

As evening falls, make your way to The Shed, a hidden laneway bar that’s a favourite among locals. Strung with fairy lights and easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there, order a cocktail, share an antipasto board and settle in for an evening with friends.

Plan your visit around a community event

One of the things that makes Wynnum so special is its strong community spirit, and nowhere is that more evident than its calendar of annual events. If your visit happens to coincide with one of these, you’re in for a treat.

  • For arts and culture: Wynnum Fringe lights up the bayside each winter with comedy, cabaret, circus and live music, while Wynnum Wonderland brings festive performances and family entertainment to the foreshore in November and December.
  • For families: The annual Halloween Festival and Parade transforms George Clayton Park into one of Brisbane’s biggest community celebrations.
  • For active travellers: Join the friendly Wynnum parkrun community every Saturday morning before rewarding yourself with breakfast at one of the nearby cafés.
  • For shopping and local makers: Wynnum UpLate sees Bay Terrace’s boutiques and cafés stay open after dark with live entertainment, while neighbouring Manly hosts regular farmers’ and twilight markets.

Extend your day into Manly

Manly Boathouse, Brisbane

If you’re not quite ready for the day to end, simply keep following the waterfront. Around a 30-minute stroll from Wynnum, neighbouring Manly offers another slice of Brisbane’s bayside lifestyle.

The walk itself is part of the experience, with uninterrupted views across the bay before arriving at Manly Harbour, one of the largest recreational marinas in the Southern Hemisphere. If you’re visiting on a weekend, check whether the Manly Creative Markets are on. And while you’re browsing the stalls, look out for The Crema Room. They sell pots of tiramisu for $10, and it’s genuinely the best tiramisu I’ve ever tasted!

For coffee or a long lunch, Manly Boathouse is hard to beat. Grab one of its signature cold foam coffees and settle in under the sunshine overlooking the marina. In winter, outdoor gas heaters create an equally inviting atmosphere after dark, making it just as appealing for an evening drink or dinner.

If you’re travelling with children, pop into Mad Hatters Bookshop, an independent bookstore known for its regular author events, story times and school holiday activities that have made it a favourite with local families.

Round out your bayside adventure with a hearty meal at Celtic Corner, where comforting pub classics like Guinness pie with chips and gravy pair perfectly with a pint before catching the train home from Manly Station.

For me, that’s the beauty of Wynnum. You can spend a whole day here without doing anything particularly spectacular, and still have a beautiful time. Between the waterfront, the local cafés and the community events, there’s always a reason to come back.
