Coledale Beach

With less than 2 months left in Sydney, I wanted to go on one last camping trip to explore somewhere new and to feel like I’d tucked enough NSW travel under my belt.

Coledale Beach has been on my wish-list for a couple of years now, but every time I’ve tried to book an unpowered spot (usually long weekends and holiday periods), it’s always completely full. Last month on a whim though, I called up to see if they had anything available for the remainder of 2018 and bingo, they had a single prime spot left on the beach front.

Just 1 hour south of Sydney CBD via the scenic Sea Cliff Bridge, the small beachside village of Coledale is a great location to swim, fish, or just sit back and enjoy the views and sound of the ocean at your doorstep. We’re not quite at the balmy stage of Spring yet so night one was quite cold, though Coledale Beach is bordered by rocky outcrops that protect the beach from the worst of the windy weather.

After eggs, bacon and pancakes for breakfast, we strolled up the beach past Coledale Rock Pool and discovered Coledale Baths. This outdoor pool was originally built during World War I and was a popular swimming spot back in the day, but now it looks pretty gross and abandoned. After reading through the Bath’s history (a 34-year-old ironworker from Balmain, struck his head on submerged rocks and drowned after diving in to rescue his six-year-old daughter who was swept out to sea), I can see why! Nevertheless, I enjoyed it for a little photography.

With a need for caffeine, we came across the cafe Bread, Espresso & and it was honestly one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. After a bit of digging, it was an Allpress Espresso Blend – if you’re in the market for a new coffee bean.

For the remainder of the afternoon, we drove back towards the Sea Cliff Bridge and stopped to take in the views properly. This is a highlight along the Grand Pacific Drive, which features a scenic walkway surrounded by rocky cliffs.

And before we knew it, after another night of drinks and BBQ burgers, it was time to go home. Amazing spot – I definitely recommend!
